American Bresse Chicks

Here at Crazy Clucker’s Farm we’re a small breeder that exclusively breeds American Bresse chickens and no other breeds.  We feel common sense poultry management, along with maintaining low stress levels makes for happy, healthy chickens! Our breeding program includes birds with qualities worthy to reproduce along with new traits from the cross. Our flocks include white, black and blue American Bresse.

OUR STANDARDS

  • We never mix our blue or black birds with our white birds. NEVER! We are trying to breed the purest colors possible.
  • We don’t hatch from pullets under a year old unless eggs are of normal size. (Hatching from small eggs produces small chicks)
  • We do our best to adhere to the French Bresse SOP (Standard of Perfection)

Goslings

When you have chickens that love to forage, they need adequate protection. By day we have four species of geese that does that and more. Prior to getting geese we had a serious Hawk and Eagle problem. Everything loves chicken! Since we have introduced our goose program the ariel predators magically went away! In fact one of our flocks was let out without the geese and a Red Tail hawk actually landed in the pen and was going after one of our Bresse hens! That has not happened since and there have been no hawks or eagles repeat the problem. So if you question the guarding ability geese don’t doubt it!

With that said we have African, White Chinese, Toulouse and American Buff geese and will have goslings from all four species available, although some are in more limited supply.

Hatching

We hatch in several incubators so we insure what is hatched from our test hatches and how our crosses turn out. Also that way can keep colors separate and from which birds we hatched from.

We will pull any chick or bird with any color leakage or faults we see even as a day old chick. If any faults are visible they go into the layers only group or future meat group depending on sex of the bird.

We are a very small breeder not a hatchery, but we will sell some day old chicks from our nicest breeder birds and we are extremely selective of the chicks we sell. Selling some helps offset the cost our own my breeding program and feed.

With all that said we can’t always see the future or from the years of generations back and color leakage can rear its ugly head even after molting. It’s just a fact of chicken life.

We are working hard to breed out all of color leakage or any other faults by strict culling practices, but the lord and Mother Nature have the final say.

No human or animal is perfect and never will be no matter how hard you try. Buyers need to also be strict with culling their inferior birds and only retain the best for breeders to help this incredible breed move forward. This is a meat AND egg breed (dual purpose) so keeping an even balance between the two is of the utmost importance.

We love this breed and will continue to breed only the best we can.
